I think the first song I was aware of by the band was 'Nothing ever happens' and I loved it and so found out a bit more about the band and got hold of the 'Waking Hours' album shortly after it came out. I was hooked - here was a man who was a poet, yet composed beautiful, rhythmic music that somehow seemed to capture exactly how I felt as I blundered from one doomed love affair to another!!
In my first year at University the 'Change Everything' album came out and it's this album that remains to this day my absolute favourite lyrically and musically. I've only had two really important love affairs in my life (though of course been out with many more girls that with hindsight were never either important or serious). The first of those two important relationships was with an incredibly beautiful girl called Michelle (probably the most beautiful girl I ever dated) who I dated for the last year and a half of my time at University and my first year after Uni which I spent on the dole!! We were incredibly happy together and she remained my benchmark woman until I met my now wife in 1997. Del Amitri was the soundtrack to that 'one that got away' relationship and I can't help hearing songs from the Change Everything album in particular and remembering some of the most special times of my life.
Am I the only one here who finds themselves looking back on the passion and lust of a relationship like that in my early twenties from the slightly bored stability of married middle age and sees it as some kind of 'golden age'? I'm certainly playing a lot of Del Amitri of late and thinking about the times we shared...
Del Amitri's music is certainly taking me back to the Summer of 89!!
