Event Details
Glasgow International Jazz Festival: Ryan Quigley Big Band with Justin Currie

Saturday 27th June 2009, 8.00pm

Old Fruitmarket
Candleriggs
Glasgow G1 1NQ
0141 353 8000
93A34ECB-142A-7D7B-9CED7066091647C6

Del Amitri singer-songwriter Justin Currie gets the rip-roaring, blazing backing band of his dreams as he joins the Scottish National Jazz Orchestra’s lead trumpeter, Ryan Quigley’s extracurricular extravaganza.

With a well-earned reputation for fiery musicianship, Quigley brings all the punch and dynamism – and more – of the sextet that produced his enthusiastically received debut album, Laphroaig-ian Slip, to his orchestral arrangements and guarantees Currie a team of hot soloing talents. Nothing Ever Happens? Don’t you believe it. Cheesy

Yeah!

Listen to 'Feck' on his myspace page, can't fathom what JC's gonna do with 'modern jazz' and can't see him doin Frank Sinatra big band stuff, infact even typing 'big band' has got me a bit twitchy  Shocked

However Tommy Smith(tenor sax) is the musical director and saw him in the 90's when I was into all this.....Weather Report,Sanborn, Joni Mitchell with Jaco Pastorius and Wayne Shorter,Brecker Brothers(at the same fruitmarket venue 1992,RIP Micheal Brecker genius 2007)

It's very clever and very loud but maybe not everyones cuppa tea and got to say rather disappointed in the 'new' Fruit Market shed with very little rapport with the band and the punters!

Might not be one to miss however...Arrrrrggghhhh........ might be amazing

Tickets gone for balcony standing.......oops!

Does anyone know what he'll be singing, have a liking for 'That Ole Black MagiC'

HELP!!

Not going to make this one - jazz doesn't really do it for me so I'm sure I'll get over it.  Roll Eyes

Oooh, I'm going to miss this too!
On Justin's Myspace there's the description of the show:

6/27/2009 8:00 PM at Old Fruitmarket
Candleriggs, GLASGOW,
Cost: £14

"This is a JAZZ show with the Ryan Quigley Big Band. Ryan and I played together with the "With Strings Attached" project a few years ago and he has kindly asked me to contribute as a guest singer for roughly half the show. Ryan is an incredibly talented trumpeter and arranger who, for me, is always a great pleasure to work with. I will be doing 50% self-written and 50% cover material. It’s great fun and the pool of players is really top class - but be warned - the arrangements are jazz, not rock. If you think Ornette Coleman is a miner wearing bling give this a miss. Otherwise - come see my ham crooner’s creaking soft shoe shuffle."

I have to say Ornette Coleman doesn't do it for me. I prefer songs with melody. But I do like the brass arrangements on songs "like let it be me" and can imagine these with a jazzier arrangement.

By the way what is "feck" Quote:
Listen to 'Feck' on his myspace page

Feck! Can you not work it out Wink

Ryan Quigley's Myspace page,it's gonna sound like this with probably the jazz format of each musician doing a solo bit, then them all together, very loud and a bit of random stuff chucked in,it's very impressive, you'll love it or maybe not!

Think the covers will be better as can't think of a Del song that could be adapted to suit but you never know and did really like the Button Up Gigs so............... Cool

Go listen  Smiley

In the few days I've been dithering about booking this the bloody flights have doubled in price.  Grrr.  Is it going to be worth it I wonder?

It's this weekend!...that came round fast!  Smiley

I'm so tired and I've got loads to do before I fly up tomorrow night - I wish I had one of those magic stopwatches so I could get a few more hours in the day!!

Travelling light so no fancy camera this trip...never mind - I'll try and get a few pics with my Lumix.

Not that good, really disappointed it was a 'big band' and not more of a modern jazz arrangement.

Glad he pointed out though that he hadn't chosen the songs and guessing it was more to do with what was required to suit.

Nat King Coles Nature Boy and the Beach Boys God Only Knows, appropriate title for whatever it was he had in mind, the others weren't much better.

Maybe I was the only one as the crowd seemed to like it.

Got some footage,I'll see if I can get it on myspace at some point.

Hiya folk.  Got some pics on Facebook but don't know if they'll link onto here.

Life's kind of got in the way today with busy work and folk in hospital to visit so I don't have time to upload stuff properly.  My little videos are pretty good but huge files so I'll need to get one of the techie guys at work to help me resize.

I loved hearing Justy sing again but it didn't really work very well with the big band arrangements.  The Beach Boys song was naff, they ruined Not Where It's At, Sleep Instead was ok, Nature Boy was good...god my brain's gone dead now and can't remember the other songs.  I'll post more tomorrow.

I think his voice would be fine with other jazz songs - he should probably have stuck to doing jazz covers that suited his voice and not bothered trying to 'jazz up' the Del songs.  Personally I don't like the big band sound anyway and would like to have heard a more intimate jazz sound.

Still love him anyway!!!  Smiley   More soon.

My clips are up now...

Nature Boy.

Click on my name and you'll pick up the others.  There's only a short clip of the end of Not Where It's At cos it was pretty horrible with the jazz backing.

I don't know what the other song is....anyone know?

Ok, just found the other song.  It's Out of This World by Harold Arlen.  Oh, and just spotted that he also wrote The Man That Got Away (one of my all-time favourite songs) and Over The Rainbow.  Smiley

Listening to Ella singing it on Spotify.  Smiley

Seems he's doing another one of these big band things in Aberdeen in March.  Are there others?
