Title: ignoring a user

I've updated the software on the site to allow you to block posts from a specific user. Let me know if you have any questions.

I suspect there are some who will quake in fear at such a the addition of said feature.

Good, says I....

How on earth does that work then - surely you couldn't keep a handle on the thread if you blocked out one or more user's contribution?

Title: Re: ignoring a user
Post by ClintonHammond on 10/30/07 at 00:56:42
Some users have proved that their 'contributions' aren't worth wet, squirty squat.

Does that scare ya?

I like to know what it is exactly that I'm ignoring

I think I'll chose to not ignore anyone, I like reading everyones posts, weather its general banter, del amitri talk, justin talk or just plain rubbish.

Not really, but  you certainly prove that an "ignore user" facility is not half as useful as an "Awa' tae crappity smack, Dildo" function would be.

Title: Re: ignoring a user

The message

"This is a blocked message from a member you have chosen to ignore"

Replacing the post above improves this message board a hundred fold....

Title: Re: ignoring a user
Post by travers on 10/30/07 at 08:27:13
in the old days i'd have just said 'crappity smack off you wank, no one likes you or your shite posts'

that would have been the old days though..

Title: Re: ignoring a user

And that just would have degenerated into a childish little flame war that would make this place seem even worse.

This way, once someone has earned being ignored, you never have to endure them again.

"She's done"? Meaning me, for adding a feature? Eh. I had 5 people ask about it, it took me all of 2 seconds, and I certainly won't be ignoring any of you. No skin off my teeth.

But hey, if you laugh so easily, I'm jealous. :) My sense of humor is a bit snobbier ;P

You know, the one annoying thing about the "ignore user" board mod is that the board moderator can't ignore people.

Not that I would, ya know, ignore people or anything, but I thought I'd mention it. Also, YOU GUYS CAN'T IGNORE ME MWAHAAAAA

Title: Re: ignoring a user

I don't need fancy technology to ignore people and I can ignore you so there!!

Title: Re: ignoring a user
Post by welshgirl on 10/30/07 at 10:27:00
ooh I have a question:
If someone is ignoring someone else, lets say A is ignoring B. Then C quotes B in one of her posts, will A be able to see the quote or not?
If so they may accidentally end up reading something they were trying to ignore. What would happen then? Does the website self destruct or something???

Title: Re: ignoring a user
Post by travers saves on 10/30/07 at 10:28:20
and do you know if you're being ignored and by who?

Title: Re: ignoring a user
Post by ClintonHammond on 10/30/07 at 10:31:25
Both are dependent on the message board software being used.

Decent software (Actually even below standard software these days) will 'know' to block quotes if one uses the provided auto-quote feature....

I don't think I've seen a feature added that will tell someone, "You are being ignored by such-and-such member."

I can't imagine why anyone would code such an app.....

Yes, you'd see the ignored person in the quote, I believe.

Better to have a feature and not need it, than to need a feature, and not have it.....

Many here have talked about some few whose boorish behaviour serves only to drive away new posters.  A readily available, comprehensive Ignore Feature (As available on most other message boards)  might help keep problem posters off newbies, and allow the ranks here to swell a bit....

Well I.m not going to be ignoring anyone.  I'd hate to think I was missing out on anything!

I think the British sense of humour and the way we abuse all and everyone is sometimes a little hard for people to take though, so I suppose this is quite a useful little function for some.

But is there anyone that ClintonHammond WON'T be ignoring?

Right. So, if you don't want to ignore anyone, don't, and then you won't get confused. :) Unfortunately, adding the feature didn't stop the complaining of the person it was added for, so at this point I throw my hands skyward and say, "eh".

I don't think that the common use, as in multipack, is grammatically correct - that's more copywriting type jargon because hyphens don't look so good on the side of a box apparently.

It's just personal preference.
