Title: interpretation Nothing ever happens
Post by fritzfan on 06/17/06 at 03:08:03
Hi, I'm new here, and I hope you can help me out with a question that's been bugging me for some time now:
In the song "Nothing ever happens" one of the last lines goes "They burn down the synagogues at six o'clock". Now I would generally interpret the whole song as being about boredom, routine etc., but of course this line doesn't quite fit this context. So what do you think about the song iin general and this line in particular? ???

I always thought of it as a comment on what was on the six o'clock news.  As at the time the main early evening news bulletin of the day was at 6pm on BBC1 and not very many people had satellite, cable, 24 hour news etc so it was the one you watched when you got home from work.

God I feel old just typing that.  :-(

And the news showing the synagogue burning down is on with the sound turned down, over in the corner of the bar, while everyone is getting drunk, getting pulled, talking about the day's sports scores, the latest joke, etc.

Just my take on the song. We're all fiddling while Rome's burning..

Except that instead of fiddling, these days it's watching Big Brother and worrying about Wayne Rooney's foot.

It was written at a time where synagogues were being burnt down...Not sure about the 6.0ppm part, I liked Hils theory though.

If anyone will ever come across the cover version by Manfred Mann's Earth Band (no kidding!) he'll notice that this particular verse was left off. Mann himself never dared to explain and even Justin was surprised to learn about it.

Hi there Shadok.

Please ask Justin to explain the meaning of it for us if you have access to him.

Why would Manfred Mann leave that verse off?...did he think it was a bit controversial?

I like Hilary's theory as well.  :)

Had to re-read that, thought you said you liked the Manfred Mann version, which left me needing a very strong drink.

Lol!  I'll join you in that drink....I've started on the whisky to see in Hogmanay.

My comment about your theory was agreeing with what Joe said earlier - I've actually never even heard Manfred's version of the song!

It is truly awful especially that twangy synth thing, think the recording guy might have just said CUT very loudly and hoped they'd pack up.

Lordy, I'm going to have to find a copy of that now, just to see how awful it really is!

It's on you tube and I have to agree, it's awful, some songs should be just left alone. ::)

Wow!  What an unfortunate collision of two artists I really like...two rights gone terribly wrong!
