Title: Rufus Wainwright
Post by ChrissieA on 04/01/06 at 12:46:23
I'm sorry - but I really need a Rufus thread.  :-*

I just love, love, love his music, and find him totally gorgeous-looking as well (in all his gayness).  ::)

I'm sure you lovely US folk must like Rufus as well?...some of you?....please?

Lol.  I don't usually like his 'dandy' look, but I just found this pic stunning.  I think it's the little smile behind his eyes........

....sigh.

Recognise this one Rosie? x

That picture makes him look like he has some dreadful flesh eating disease.  Or severe facial burns that would need one of those mask things perhaps - very phantom of the opera.

Y'know Rosie - it took me a couple of readings to understand what you said there.  I've twigged now that 'snaps' mean fastenings.

Love that expression 'seductive dishevelment'!!  Sums him up wonderfully.  ;D

Title: Re: Rufus Wainwright

Or..

If it were not for my daddy and his rich muso chums I would still be working in my local butchers, getting crappity smacked up the arse with a frozen lamb chop from a butcher who is married and also has 3 kids..

But now I'm a musician who gets crappity smacked up the arse from fans who work in butcher shops who stick frozen lamps chops up my arse.

"But I'm still a veggie, oh I'm so complicated and gay I don't know what to do" (said in a right poofy voice and quickly as the bum bandits do.)

I work with someone who quite recently expressed absolute shock at the rumours about Sir Cliff... having somehow never heard them before and stammering " but... wasn't he with Sue Barker?"

Title: Re: Rufus Wainwright
Post by JJB on 06/16/06 at 05:03:05

crappity smacking Sue Barker makes him worse then gay. She is the thinking mans Barbara Windsor.  I rather crappity smack Ronnie Barker, and his been dead years , The fact that he is man should be the worrying part of this statement not that he is dead , that just dont help the matter, I mean a holes a hole. (Well in prison thats how they think and some parts of Derby)

I can picture it now, How do you want me to serve my balls over Sue? Shall I lob them over or use the forehand Yeah Yup?

I bet there parents are so proud producing two crappity smacked up and spactiatcated kids like that..

It's a sign of the Apocalypse... I actually AGREE with Joe about something!!  Wow, those are some hideous, disco-era shorts she's wearing.

As for the music, Rufus is OK, but he ain't his Daddy.  Louden makes clever seem easy, and has a sharper intellect and more wicked sense of humor than his son.

Wanna know what's what with this kid?  Here's a short biography, from Allmusic.com:

A singer/songwriter whose lush, theatrical pop harked back to the traditions of Tin Pan Alley, cabaret and even opera, Rufus Wainwright was born in 1973; the son of folk music luminaries Loudon Wainwright III and Kate McGarrigle, his parents divorced while he was a child, and he was raised by his mother in Montreal. Beginning his piano studies at age six, by thirteen he was touring with his mother, aunt Anna and his sister Martha in a group billed as the McGarrigle Sisters and Family; a year later, Wainwright was nominated for a Juno (the Canadian equivalent of a Grammy) as Most Promising Young Artist, while his "I'm A-Runnin'" was concurrently nominated for a Genie (the Canadian countepart to an Oscar) for Best Song in a Film.

Coming out as a homosexual while still in his teens, Wainwright sought solace in opera throughout his adolescent years, also becoming an enormous fan of performers including Edith Piaf, Al Jolson and Judy Garland. After attending the prestigious Millbrook School in upstate New York, he briefly studied music at Montreal's McGill University, eventually turning away from classical performance towards pop and rock. Becoming a fixture on the Montreal club circuit, Wainwright soon cut a series of demos with producer Pierre Marchand; Loudon Wainwright III then passed a copy of the tape to friend Van d**e Parks, who in turn handed it on to DreamWorks exec Lenny Waronker. The label signed him soon after, resulting in the release of Rufus Wainwright during the spring of 1998. The album landed on several critics' "best of 1998" lists, while Wainwright spent the next few years touring and appearing sporadically on soundtracks (Shrek) and compilations (The McGarrigle Hour). His sophomore album, Poses, brought similar acclaim in mid-2001. After spending much of 2001 and 2002 touring on his own and with Tori Amos, Wainwright settled into Bearsville Studio, in Woodstock, N.Y., with producer Marius deVries to record sort of a double album. The first project Want One was released in September, 2003. Want Two followed a year later.

Bottom left - I'm casual, yet sophisticated, and getting a bit bored.
Bottom right - I'm really pissed off now.

:)

I had an interesting dream about him last night but can't remember all the details now Rosie.

It started being very surreal, lounging round a hotel swimming pool that had giant rats swimming in it (except they had false porcupine spines strapped on their backs!!!)??

There was a group of people I knew and we were all friends with Rufus and staying at the hotel.  He wrote notes for everyone when he was leaving and I couldn't find one for me.  One of my 'friends' (not anyone I know in real life!) took great delight in showing me the other notes he'd written cos she was jealous of my relationship with Rufus.

Just when I was about to break down in tears, Rufus appeared with something he'd written for me to say goodbye and also gave me a present of a beautiful silver ring.  Aw.

So...wonder what that says about me being 'needy' or something?

Chrissie-there aren't many gay men that make my mouth water. That is JUST NOT FAIR :-[

He has the most bizarre torso hair. Do you think he styles and sculpts it? And it looks like he's had some sort of plastic surgery on his navel to make it more...attractive....

hi Chrissie and all!! I saw Rufus in concert last saturday and it was really, really good. Just him, the piano and the guitar (and backing vocals from his sister Lucy in some songs). He has a really beautiful voice!! I was told that he's more of a showman when he has his band, but music was lovely anyway... Chrissie, he didn't take his shirt off... but I took lots of pictures and I'll send you some, specially one smiling (I thought about you when I saw it!). He's got a lovely smile!!!

Have to say I prefer his sister,Martha.Musically speaking that is-can't say I fancy either of them....in fact I'm struggling to think of any musicians I actually fancy...jeez I'm getting old.

The biggest problem I have with Rufus is the way he seems to slur everything he sings-great musician, great songs, but I just want to yell  "Enunciate boy!" and rap his knuckles with a ruler. Theres no hope for me now is there?I might just as well book my place in the retirement home...where did I put that zimmer frame??

Glad I'm not the only one who found that irritating.  He can enunciate; maybe he thinks it's cute or stylish or summat.  Lazy, nasal drawling from someone who sets such store by opera and its singers.  Well, I've pretty much gotten past it & forgiven him, but once in awhile I'd like to pop him in the head still.   ;)

Martha I find very hard to listen to so I don't.  It's her voice.  Not her fault and no doubt she's quite talented, but the sound of her voice gets on my nerves, sorry to say.

Thats what I love about music-its so hard to explain to someone why you don't like a certain artist-or why you do.Sometimes someone will say "if you like so and so listen to this" and I don't like it-and they can't understand why.!!
Been trying to get into Cosmic rough riders-just can't do it..no l dont know why I can't!
So I love Marthas voice but can't quite get into Rufus..haven't given up yet though...

I got into the Cosmics newest album because it reminded me of Justin's voice a little bit.

I know what you all mean about Rufus and his slurring and I think you do forget about it after a while.

His voice is so amazing that you can't help but forgive him for it.  ;D

The first time I heard him sing live (was at the Barbican) he opened with a song in French called L'Absence (the one on the Fillmore DVD) and I had one of those jaw-dropping moments as his voice filled the Barbican.  I just thought omigod how fantastic does he sound - I think that was the moment my obsession started!  :)

Yes, but it's bordering on a sin that he is not using his voice to its potential. He really could be doing so much more with it.

And then there's the story of the tourist who walked into a Brighton curio/antique shop. After looking around for a while, he noticed a very life-like bronze statue of a rat. It had no price tag, but it was so striking that he decided to have it anyway. So he took it to the owner and said: "How much is this bronze rat?" The owner replied: "It is £12 for the rat, and £100 for the story." Well the tourist gave the man his £12 and said: "I'll just take the rat - you can keep the story." As he walked off down the street, he noticed that a few real rats had crawled out of the sewers and begun following him. This was a little disconcerting, so he started to walk a little faster, but within a couple of blocks the swarm of rats had grown to hundreds, and they were all squealing & screeching in a very menacing way. He increased his speed & ran on towards the beach, and as he ran, he looked behind him and saw the rats now numbered in their MILLIONS, and they were running faster & faster. By now very concerned, he ran to the edge of the sea and threw the bronze rat far out into the water. Amazingly, the millions of real rats jumped into the water after it and were all drowned. The man walked back to relate all this to the shop owner, who said:
"Ah, you've come back for the story then!"
"No," said the tourist - "I came back to see if you've got a bronze Muslim fundamentalist cleric, and anything French.

Ebay is evil as far as ticket selling goes - this is my position and I can't help but stick closer to it everytime something I want to go to sells out in hours yet there are instantly dozens and dozens of tickets there.  Yes, yes I'm sure not EVERYONE who sells tickets there is actually EVIL but the snidey little bastards who bulk buy tickets with a view to making a ridiculous profit on them are satan's little helpers.

The Royal Albert Hall are trying to combat this by checking out ticket numbers of those sold on eBay where possible and refusing entry to anyone with those tickets.  Not sure how this is possible though - I'm sure that last time I went they only glanced at the tickets.  Whatever, they "know" if a ticket has been sold there.

And a lot of smaller places are making you show proof of ID before allowing you in.

I have sold tickets on eBay myself a couple of times - when I was not able to go - but I only asked face value as I didn't want to be associated with these bastard touts.

Title: Re: Rufus Wainwright
Post by hayley on 11/10/06 at 05:13:50
The last time I sold tickets it was because the person I went to see Morrissey with had also managed to get us tickets and hers were better seats than mine.  I left my details at the box office as the gig had sold out and later the same day someone rang me to buy the tickets.  I sold them for what I'd paid for them and only met them on the night to hand them over so they didn't get the chance to sell them on... if they hadn't shown up I could have sold them to a tout for a profit I suppose but that would have been a last resort.  The couple who bought them were suprised when I turned up as they'd heard how much touts were selling for and thought I'd change my mind... sometimes I'm too nice for my own good.  ;-)

Any Rufus fans on here will no doubt check out his board for all the reports.  I'd just like to say that it was a fantastic evening - a triumph for Rufus - a truly wonderful, memorable and emotional show - a totally different beast compared to the likes of a Del Amitri or Justin Currie gig, but something special to remember.

:P It could have been very possible seeing as he lost his voice at the Paris show and couldn't complete some of the songs.

He's not always perfect (who is).  Sometimes he forgets the words and messes around too much.  At times it's charming and endearing but there have been times when I've found it a bit cringeworthy.

I still think he's fantastic though!....and Sunday was really good.  I went with a mate who was a non-Rufus fan and she loved it and was cheering along with the rest of us during the standing ovations.  ;D ;D

Here you have the sitting plan and from what I remember the stalls where partly covered by the upper floor so you shouldn't be too far from the stage...

But of course I shall go and find out.  And buy the new album.   8-)

Omigod, I could always appreciate that Rufus is quite a looker, but he's on Jonathan Ross at the moment talking, and it's nearly as bad as hearing David Beckham talk for the first time, he doesn't sound like I thought he would!  :o

The Judy Garland tribute show will be released in September as a CD and DVD!  Yay!  :)

Rufus is everywhere this week - Jonathan Ross and the breakfast show this morning with Andrew Marr.  Isn't technology great...the files have already been made available on his message board which is great as I missed seeing him on Wossy. (It didn't sound too obviously 'Woofus Wainwright' when he introduced him either!  ;D)

There's a really good write up in The Sun (! shock horror).  Read it at this link if you're interested.

Sun Article

God knows what some Sun readers might make of him...!!!!  I'm not sure he's going to get the huge mainstream success he'd like with some of these songs but there are some absolute fantastic tracks on there (a few weird ones as well).

The Observer has the new CD as their CD of the week.

I remembered who I thought he sounded like when he talks - Janice in Friends, the girl Chandler used to date with the whiney voice and annoying laugh.  He really sounds like a toned down version of her! :)

Ladies, keep listening to Release the Stars and give it a bit more time because it is fantastic live!

It was a great show last night.  I wasn't sure if anything could top the Glasgow show but this did it.  The venue was great (The Old Vic) and really suited him.  A beautiful old theatre with fab acoustics.  He sang one song without a microphone to test it out and it sounded great.

He played all of the new album and a few old favourites plus a couple of the Judy Garland songs (his voice was pretty amazing on those...as it was throughout the whole evening).  I'm not going to give a full review on here - I'm sure you'll read better ones on the Rufus site anyway.

The only song I don't like on the album is Tulsa and his live performance didn't win me over either.  Crap song basically.

The encore was hilarious.  He sat wearing a dressing gown on a chair centre stage and put on diamond earrings and a ring, applied bright red lipstick and then stood up and was surrounded by the band (now wearing tuxedos) while he disrobed and then was revealed in full 'Judy' outfit with a black jacket, hat and black tights.  He's got the most amazing legs!!  They then went into a full dance routine of 'Get Happy' - great fun.

:) :)

Got my tickets to see him in Atlanta in August.   :D  Best friend is going with me.  (Wouldn't come see Justin, wouldn't go see Teddy, but Rufus she said yes to.  Not entirely lost, her.)

Driving around singing "Going to a Town" the other day.  It really is a theme song for anyone disaffected with that arse Dubya and the Christian right.  Which would be me.   8-)

Title: Re: Rufus Wainwright
Post by ChrissieA on 08/26/07 at 17:10:45
Well, just finished watching it and thought the editing was very odd.

I know they had about 120 minutes to get into just over an hour but it seemed to ruin the whole flow of the thing.  At one point he was introducing a song with his jacket on and the next minute he was singing without it on...!

It was great to see it it all in close up though.  There were a few shots of the audience - I'll rewind it tomorrow and see if I can spot myself.

The Man Who Got Away was just as fab as I remember it.  Bit disappointed they didn't show Martha singing Someone To Watch Over Me...that really got to me on the night.

It's edited?  Not the whole thing??   >:(

I can understand editing some concerts, but this is a set piece, a reproduction of someone else's show.  It should all be there.

Now I'm going to pout and fume for awhile.  Not for the first time...

Title: Re: Rufus Wainwright
Post by Johnny Too Bad on 11/01/07 at 08:57:41
I would agree, if the sole arbiter is the CD swap. I watched this enterprise from afar and was terminally grateful not to have been involved. Even the idea of ploughing through 20 CDs worth of other people's cack was excruciating. The fact that Paul never misses the opportunity to revisit it suggests he has a rather inflated view of his heroism on this one.

However, this incident aside, I don't think he's the worst knob on the board. We've had one or two new entries lately.

Post by Johnny Too Bad on 11/01/07 at 09:09:04
Absolutely sure. I never get the chance to listen to the odd CD that I buy. And I've noticed that, for the most part, the Dels are the only band I have in common with the folk on this board. Some of the lassies, in particualr, claim to like some deeply awful music.

Title: Re: Rufus Wainwright
Post by king Arthur on 11/01/07 at 09:29:05
You lot were narky on the cd project, more people enjoyed it than didnt you miserable crappity smackers.
More's to the point, I would agree that liking DA is all I have in common with a lot of people on these boards, and that especially the females have (to my taste) shite other taste in music.  But given the choice I'd rather go out on the lash with Caro, Liz, Rosemary, Cristina, Mary et al, than waste my time playing "My metaphorical thingy is bigger than yours" with the most of the blokes on here - who, though decent people, have varying degrees of a napoleon complex however crappity smacking lanky they are.

Title: Re: Rufus Wainwright
Post by ChrissieA on 11/02/07 at 15:33:20
That was one of the most fantastic days I've ever had!  It all feels a bit surreal now.

I arrived at the theatre for my soundcheck (!!) at 4:15 and the band had just arrived from London so everything was running late.  They put me into the hospitality room (basically just a room upstairs in the theatre with loads of food in it - a kitchen next door with a chef and a team of catering staff). I walked into the room to find Matt Johnson and Jeff Hill sitting eating and sat down and had a cup of tea with them!!

Over the next half hour various members of the band (not Rufus though) wandered in and out grabbing plates of food and said hi to me.  They all went off to do their soundcheck and I was left on my own for about 10/15 minutes (although the chef came and chatted with me for a while) before they came to get me for my soundcheck.

Gerry, the musical director, showed me where I had to stand and gave me a tambourine to hold and then told me he would signal me to swop that over for the microphone.  At that point I had to move to the front of the stage to do my bit.  They just did a quick run through of the last part of the song so I could practice with the mike.  I did it a bit too fast and Gerry said just to take it easy and slow it all down by about a third.  I didn't get another practice though!  Then that was it and I said bye until it was time for the show.

I was given a set list and a timing schedule and told that someone would come and get me from the audience between 2 songs (at about 9:00pm).  Gerry said if it got half way through 'Leaving For Paris' and no-one had come for me to panic! Great...thanks for that joke Gerry.  ::)

Anyway, after the soundcheck I was feeling ok but as I waited for the start of the show my nerves starting kicking in.  I tried to relax and enjoy the show and sort of managed to until it got near the time to go backstage.  Nobody came!!  Leaving For Paris was a couple of minutes in and I was starting to panic - then I spotted a security guy peering over from the side door so I just grabbed my bag and made my way backstage.

Ok - got the fairy wings on - got the butterfly sparkly thing on my wrist and I'm waiting in the wings for my cue.  I decided there and then that I was going to enjoy it and stuff nerves!! I heard Rufus say my name and I was on!!!!

It was fantastic.  I just started dancing as soon as the song started and kept looking over at Rufus and he was smiling back at me every time. 2 of the guys from the horn section came over to dance with me and that felt amazing - I felt like I was in the band!  The feeling washing over the stage was just total happiness, joy, love...whatever you want to call it.  You could just feel all these great vibes - what a high it was.

It came to my spoken bit and I swapped the tambourine for the mike and somehow I just went into this other level where I felt confident and happy and very much 'a performer'.  I fluffed the second line (I said city instead of town) but recovered pretty quickly and got to the end without any further thingy ups!  Rufus kept looking at me and smiling - it was really like a dream coming true...a wonderful, totally encompassing feeling of joy.  He kissed me on both cheeks and then we all exited stage left.  It was the interval and I was about a mile high off the ground with excitement.

Everyone was congratulating me and saying lovely things.  People were coming up to me during the interval and saying how much they'd enjoyed it.  A girl from my course was there and came to congratulate me and said how shocked she was when she recognised me on stage.

At the end of the show people were still coming up to me and one couple said they thought I had done it better than Frances de la Tour!!

....end of part one....

Wonderful, Chrissie!  You look like part of the band, like you belong up there!!  The girl who did it in Atlanta was somewhat shrill and didn't move at all; nor did the band dance with her!  You're a hit!!!
:D

Fantastic Chrissie - and yes, you really look like you belong with the band.

This is something you'll have to remember for a very long time!

I know it's not as big a deal, as I've been mates with them for years, but I've sung on stage with the Otway band a few times and it's so nerve-wracking but such a buzz so I can understand to a certain extent how you must have felt.  Never looked as glam as you though...

Can someone tell my wtf is going on here? 22 pages on someone who to my knowledge didn't appear on any Dels albums. While as a hetorosexual man (Morten Harket made me question my sexuality when I was very young but I fear another inappropriate thread coming on) I can see Mr Wainwrights attraction, does he not have a fan site of his own. So on behalf of all members of the "Appropriate Content Society" can I ask the afforementioned Mr Wainwright to crappity smack OFF!

Lol!  That's ok....just don't overdo it now with that holly...

Gerry - you know you don't have to read this thread if you don't want to!  ;) :) :-*

Sonja - it's not a bath bomb - it's a stone bust (like those of composers) and it costs $95 apparently!!  :o

Have both the CD & DVD (finally), Chrissie -- love them!  Almost like being back in Atlanta...though it could have been recorded better.  The band doesn't sound as good on the DVD as they did live.  Still, I rather love it.

Rufus's Mother Kate McGarrigle is critically ill. I'm finding this very sad because like any artist or musician you like, you feel close to them - you share their thoughts and feelings through their songs and all the life history, family and events that shape those songs.

Kate, of course, is a celebrated musician herself. She has been battling cancer for some time now and I suspect the outcome is not going to be good. Rufus has cancelled a tour to Australia.

I know this is the Del Amitri board and you all tolerate me going on about Rufus so I hope you don't mind me sharing this on here. We all have to go through this pain in our lives and my heart goes out to Rufus just now.

oh, Chrissie, that's so sad! They have a really close relation so it's going to be real hard for him... She played a couple of songs on the piano with Rufus on his last concert here and it was so beautiful. She's a wonderful woman, this makes me sad...

I do mind, no one wrote anything on here when Iain lost his dad so why should we have to read about this??

Anyway Rufus is used to pain, every time one of his bum chums sticks there thingy up his swollen red ring.

Talking of ring, don't call calling him now will you : )

Joe sweetie, you're so predicable...how many times are you going to bring up that phone call...I really don't understand why you want everyone to know we had phone sex.

You know this area is 'anything goes' and if you don't like it then don't read it. Please don't make fun of someone's pain at a family death by being crude and insensitive - it's not even remotely funny (even if you wrote it just to get some kind of reaction it's still effing bad).

I'm sorry that Iain's Dad has died too but we're not likely to know that information if he wasn't in the public eye like Kate McGarrigle was.

Oh Crissie you are wrong, it is at least remotely funny.

Now if I lost my remote control and could not turn my TV programs over now that would not be remotely funny....

Please excuse me as I know I keep talking to myself on this thread...but what the hell.

Dammit, the song I seem to like best on this album is a bit of a rip off from Les Miserables (unless he's deliberately 'borrowing' the melody. Rufus's song is called The Dream and it sounds like Bring Him Home from Les Mis.

Let me know what you think of the opera - I'd love to hear it.

Am getting into "Lulu" - love the piano playing, even the pedal thumps, which give an eerie but kind of cool vibe to the recording.  But it is less accessible than his other stuff and the artwork makes me wince.  Did he really "borrow" from Les Mis?  Haven't heard that music enough to tell.
